Spent another week in the DC area and thus was on the lookout for more new pizza places. Driving around in DC and even the suburbs sucks, so the priority was on places that could be walked to. That would also give exercise, to boot, so that is a bonus! There was a highway between me and this place, but luckily there was a mass transit station above it that had entrances on either side so I could use it as a bridge. I love places like this that offer a wide variety of recently made slices for lunch so you don't have to order a whole pizza. I got the two slice...(more)

For our second pizza stop during our short DC jaunt, we found a highly rated place near the Pentagon Mall which itself was close to where we stayed. While it is a chain, it is a local/regional chain and it also had a great name so I felt we had to give it try. The place was a little small and kinda busy - our only option was a small 2 top between the door and counter, kinda jammed into a little extra space. It was ok, though. They had individual-sized pizzas and some unique twisty cheese bread things that we figure we'd give a try. The prices were surprisingly reasonable ...(more)

We took a three-day trip to Washington, DC, and our firth thing to do was a Pentagon tour. However, we had to get some lunch first and due to timing, it had to someplace close by. Luckily, at the mall just south of the Pentagon there was this place called Matchbox that was highly rated. When we walked in, it was fancier than I expected and it was also really busy, so we thought we might have to audible and go to a nearby burger joint. We were able to score some counter seating right away, though, so it worked out. A waiter took our order pretty quickly...(more)

I had to go to San Angelo, Texas for a 3-week training deal and while there I definitely had to try the pizza place that most people said was the best in town and that Cork & Pig. I went for lunch on a Saturday, before heading out to a movie or something and chose to sit in a booth in the bar area where I could also watch sports. It was quite busy as well, so this avoided waiting for a regular table. The place was nice inside and out, clean and shiny, and semi-fancy, especially for central Texas. The wait staff was friendly, the prices were ...(more)

I had never heard of this place before moving to Texas, but that makes sense since it is only in San Antonio and two other nearby cities. Investigation revealed that it is a place similar to CiCi's, where for some amount around $8-9 you can eat all of the pizza that you can possibly stuff into your face in one visit. Whereas CiCi's is super no-frills, this place was kid-centric, with games and distractions for the little ones. It did have some TVs around and one had ESPN on it, so I sat in view of that. As is usual for places like this, the type of pizza you most...(more)

I had a random Thursday off so I took advantage of that to go pick up lunch for me and the wife and deliver it to her at work and eat with her in her office. I looked around for places we hadn't eaten at already near her work and found a one-off Italian joint just a couple miles from her work. I had thought Zio's was some major chain, but looking at the website it appears there are only 7 or 8 locations in 3 states. This is the only one in Texas. I got there before the take out was ready so I hung out in the restaurant for a bit - it was nice, I'd certainly dine in there sometim...(more)

I first went to DoubleDave's Pizzaworks when I was in San Angelo, Texas, for a class. Each Friday, my class choose a place to go eat and then we went to a movie. The first Friday, we went to DoubleDave's, and I remember it being good, but not great. So, when it came time to try it again, I had a little bit of trepidation and was not expecting anything great. I thought it would just be another rather generic chain place. We had not planned on stopping in ahead of time, so we had to order when we arrived. The menu was more varied than expected, impressively so,...(more)

I had a work trip to the DC area and it was a busy one without much time to go places or do anything, really. Luckily, a place I've never tried was just a 1/2 block from my hotel: We The Pizza. I love the name and the vibe and hey, they sold pizza by the slice - perfect. The second night of this event people were grouping up to go to some fancy place where I'd probably end up spending upwards of $40 to get mediocre food that wasn't pizza, so I skipped out on that and walked over to this place by myself. I order myself up a couple of slices of pepperoni and a drink. Since...(more)
Ever since a fateful day in the mid to late 80s when my dad said, "Whatever you want" and I got my first pepperoni pizza, pizza has been my favorite food. And that is exactly how I think pizza is best - pepperoni and cheese. Sure, some other toppings are fine from time to time, but for my money, I'll take extra pepperoni.
